THE HOLY ROSARY
According to Dominican tradition, in 1206, St. Dominic was in Prouille, France, attempting to convert the Albigensians back to the Catholic faith. The young priest had little success until one day he received a vision of the Blessed Virgin, who gave him the rosary as a tool against heretics, and it was then promoted by Blessed Allan de la Roche.
The practice of meditation during the praying of the Hail Marys was attributed to Dominic of Prussia (author of Liber experientiae 1458), a 15th-century Carthusian monk, who called it the "Life of Jesus Rosary" (vita Christi Rosarium)
OUR LADY OF THE HOLY ROSARY
So, it was as a result of the spiritual effect of the Holy Rosary which St. Dominic used in converting the Albigensians back to the Catholic faith, which might have prompted Pope Pius V in 1571 to call on all of Europe to pray the rosary for victory at the battle of Ottoman Navy of Lepanto, in which the Christian belligerents included the Papal States were under siege. The Christian victory at Lepanto was at first celebrated as the feast of "Our Lady of Victory" on October 7th of every year and to celebrate the anniversary of the defeat of the Turkish fleet, the battle ended the threat of Muslim domination of the Mediterranean and was ascribed in part to the prayers and processions of the Rosary confraternity in Rome.
In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the name of the feast to Feast of the Holy Rosary, to be celebrated on the first Sunday of October. However, it was Pope Pius X in 1913 who changed the date back to 7th October, as part of his effort to restore the celebration of the liturgy of Sundays which is known as mini-Easter Sunday. Then, in 1960 under Pope John XXIII, it is listed under the title Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary; and under the 1969 liturgical reforms of Pope Paul VI, Our Lady of the Rosary is mentioned as a mandatory memorial.
OCTOBER DEVOTION
The ENCYCLICAL LETTER OF POPE LEO XIII ON DEVOTION OF THE ROSARY (Sept. 1st, 1883)
He started the practice of devoting October to the Rosary devotion. In a letter of September 1, 1883, mindful of the Rosary's power to strengthen faith and foster a life of virtue, he outlined the triumphs of the Rosary in past times and admonished the faithful to dedicate the month of October to the Blessed Virgin through the daily recitation of her Rosary in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, in order to obtain through her intercession the grace that God would console and defend His Church in her sufferings. More so, remember that October is also the feast of the Holy Rosary which spurs the Pope to establish the October devotion.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAYING THE ROSARY
The importance cannot be overemphasized, however, it is better to pray a decade meditatively and gain indulgence, than praying the whole decades without meditating on the mysteries that will attract no indulgence.
Just imagine if the Holy Rosary can be used to conquer the enemies of the Church and win her victory, know that there are no difficulties you may be passing through that the Rosary can not win for you.
Finally, note that satan is threatened by the prayer of the Holy Rosary, more reason he discourages people from praying it.
Pick up your Rosary and pray it to overcome every obstacle in your life and that of your family.
*Peace ✌️ be with you.*
