TOPIC FOR REFLECTION

THE THEOLOGY OF THE LAMB.

The Lord gave instructions to the sons and daughters of Israel on what to do. Each family should kill a lamb, eat as instructed, and put the blood as a sign on their doorposts, and when an angel of death shall come,  their entire household shall be saved and not killed.

This is the origin of this song:

When I see the Blood when I see the Blood,

When I see the Blood, I will pass, I will pass over you. (over you)

So quoting part of the first reading to affirm the origin of the above song, the Lord told them saying:

"When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall fall upon you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, you shall observe it as an ordinance forever.”

Therefore, here are some of the lessons from the first reading

1. Jesus became the Lamb in the new testament in place of the animal lamb in the old testament.

2. The animal Lamb was killed,  Jesus as the Lamb was also killed.

3. The Israelites were instructed on how to piously eat the sacrificed lamb, just as communicants are being instructed on how to receive Jesus the lamb worthily, who left Himself for us in the Holy Eucharist.

4. There should be no leftovers of the roasted lambs, and there were, it's to be burnt because Egypt was not a holy place to preserve the leftover, while today, Jesus is preserved in the Tabernacle after the Holy Mass.

5. The blood of the lamb at the doorpost of the Israelites make the angel of death not to kill them, just as the blood of Jesus the lamb shed on the cross of Calvary became washed away our sins. The blood of Jesus saved us from the damnation of death.

Therefore, in connecting the Gospel with the first reading, the Pharisees were acting like Pharao who was afflicting pains and sufferings on the Israelites. Remember that Jesus is a Jew, an Israelite, so they wanted to kill him, hence they fault all His actions.

Accusing Him of allowing His disciples not to observe the sabbath day, they never knew that He is the fullness of Sabbath day,  because He is God whom we worship on the said Sabbath day.

However, because of His compassionate love for us, He left His throne in heaven to save us from death.

More reason He told them saying: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Peace ✌️ be with you.
